  "This ethereal shawl or blanket is an homage to traditional hap shawls of the Shetland islands. These beautiful, utilitarian shawls were made and worn to protect the wearer from the harsh weather conditions of the Scottish Isles. The wavy lace motifs on the broad border were often used as a canvas for color experimentation (like our striped variations), but haps are equally stunning in a solid color, where natural shades of wool allow the delicate textures to shine. The pattern calls for fingering-weight yarn, but it can be upsized easily using sport, DK, or even worsted weight. • Pattern specs

  CONSTRUCTION

  • The center portion, which is worked first, is a simple garter stitch square that involves no shaping.
  • The Lace Frame is worked in the round and picked up directly from the fabric of the completed Center Square. A double increase is worked at each of the four corners on every other row to shape the frame.
  • The shawl is completed with a traditional Knitted On Edging. This technique removes the need for a standard (inelastic) bind-off edge.
  • Instructions for Small size appear first, followed by Large size. If only one set of instructions appears, it applies to both sizes.

  
  

  GAUGE

  • 19 stitches and 19 ridges (38 rows) = 4″ in Garter Stitch, relaxed after lace-blocking

  
  

  NEEDLES

  • One 32″ circular needle in size needed to obtain gauge
