This wool shawl is worked in the style of a traditional Hap (with updated construction techniques), worn by the working women of Shetland. Hap shawls were made as utilitarian garments to help shield from the harsh weather conditions of the Northern Scottish Isles. Shetland knitters used the “Old Shale” lace frame as a wonderful canvas for color experimentation; my colored version contrasts warm and cool browns to create the telltale border gradient. We also made a pure white version – a perfect choice for an heirloom-quality christening shawl, or an elegant accessory for your layered Winter wardrobe. Two sizes are provided: the large version is dramatic and can be used as a lightweight layer around the house or as a baby blanket, while the smaller version is more suitable for regular wear.
