How to Knit: Flat Two-Color Brioche

Learn to work two-color brioche fabric back and forth in rows! Two-color flat brioche incorporates both regular brioche techniques as well as the same technique used to work flat single-row stripes: working two rows in succession on the same side of the fabric by sliding your stitches back across a circular needle. 



Written Steps

 

Two-Color Flat Brioche Stitch with Garter Selvedges

Cast on an odd number of stitches with C1 and a circular needle.

Setup Row (RS): With C2, knit 1, *Yf-Sl1-YOF, purl 1; repeat from * to last 2 stitches, Yf-Sl1-YO, knit 1. Do not turn work; slide stitches back to other end of needle to work another RS row.

Row 1 (RS): With C1, purl 1, *BRK, Yf-Sl1-YO; repeat from * to last 2 stitches, BRK, purl 1. Turn work.

Row 2 (WS): With C2, purl 1, *Yf-Sl1-YO, BRK; repeat from * to last 2 stitches, Yf-Sl1-YO, purl 1. Do not turn; Do not turn work; slide stitches back to other end of needle to work another WS row.

Row 3 (WS): With C1, knit 1, *BRP, YF-Sl1-YOF; repeat from * to last 2 stitches, BRP, knit 1. Turn work.

Row 4 (RS): With C2, knit 1, *Yf-Sl1-YOF, BRP; repeat from * to last 2 stitches, Yf-Sl1-YO, knit 1. Do not turn work; slide stitches back to other end of needle to work another RS row.

Repeat Rows 1-4 for pattern.

 

Abbreviations:

BRK: Brioche Knit - Knit the next stitch together with its corresponding yarn over from the previous row.

BRP: Brioche Purl - Purl the next stitch together with its corresponding yarn over from the previous row.

C1: Color 1

C2: Color 2

YF-Sl1-YO: Yarn Forward, Slip 1, Yarn Over - Bring the working yarn under the needle to the front of the work, slip the next stitch purlwise, then bring the yarn over the needle to the back (creating a yarn over on top of the slipped stitch), in position to knit the following stitch. This slipped stitch/yarn over pair is considered one stitch.

YF-Sl1-YOF: Yarn Forward, Slip 1, Yarn Over to Front - Bring the working yarn under the needle to the front of the work, slip the next stitch purlwise, then bring the yarn over the needle and back to the front (creating a yarn over on top of the slipped stitch), in position to purl the following stitch. This slipped stitch/yarn over pair is considered one stitch.
