Loomed

Basketweave Textured Hat
Skill Level: 3 of 5
Regular price $12.00

"This easy-to-work stitch pattern creates an evocative basketweave stitch that looks truly woven. Created with only knits, purls, and slip stitches, the finished fabric is richly textured with a warm, squishy hand. Slipped stitch “floats” are carried along the RS of the fabric to create the repeating pattern of horizontal lines that interweave with the vertical ribbing. Use a relaxed tension when carrying the floats for a finished fabric that is lively and elastic to the touch.

Doubling the ribbed brim brings a professional-feeling finish to the piece and helps to balance the thickly textured fabric on the hat body. Starting with a provisional cast on, the 1x1 ribbed brim is worked to twice the depth of the finished brim, then folded in half and joined into a double-layer by working the provisionally cast on stitches together with the final round of the brim.

The crown decreasing is camouflaged into the woven stitch pattern to create a seamless, decorative finish at the top of the hat. Instructions for both Adult and Child sizing are included in the pattern." — designer, Jared Flood

Pattern Specs

CONSTRUCTION

  • The hat is worked circularly from the bottom up, beginning with a doubled brim worked in 1x1 ribbing. Stitches for the hat are cast on provisionally and 1x1 ribbing is worked to twice the target depth of the brim. The brim is then folded in half and joined, with one round of live stitches being worked together with the provisionally cast- on stitches, joining both layers (a standard single-layer brim can be substituted if preferred).
  • After completion of the ribbed brim, you will begin working in the Loomed stitch pattern for the body of the hat, creating a woven texture.
  • After completion of the unshaped portion of the hat body, crown shaping is worked to close the top of the hat. The decreases have been designed to integrate invisibly into the crown, maintaining a woven look throughout the entire project.
