Riffles of openwork and crossed stitches punctuate the smooth surface of stockinette in this elegant, modern scarf. The pattern offers two sizes, a small scarf and a generous wrap. Indian Cross Stitch, worked by elongating stitches with a double yarnover and then cabling them across their neighbors, creates a fascinating texture with minimal effort. Since Loess is worked from end to end with the pattern blocks placed organically, this is the kind of knitting you can easily pick up whenever you have a moment to work a few rows. The finished garment is weightless and instantly dresses up any outfit. The sample is knit in Waxwing; try the serene blue of Rainier to smell the sea spray and hear the gulls calling.
