Product description

A motif found on a pair of traditional Latvian mittens tessellates across the fabric of this toasty cowl. Accents in a third color lift and energize the fabric, allowing for a wider range of color play. Two of every twelve rounds require working all three colors at once to achieve this effect. The Tessera cowl is worked in Loft from a provisional crochet chain; a subtle funnel shape is achieved by changing needle sizes, and the self-facing is grafted to the cast-on edge for a seamless finish. Counting the fabric layers and the floats sandwiched inside, that’s four layers of wool between you and the elements.

Tessera is also available as part of Jared Flood’s first print book, WOOLENS.

    CONSTRUCTION

    • The cowl is worked circularly, beginning with a Crocheted Provisional Cast On.
    • The cowl has a slight funnel shape created by needle shaping (altering the finished width of the piece by changing the gauge). The outer fabric and the inner self-facing are each worked with two different needle sizes—three needle sizes are used altogether. The inner self-facing is worked slightly tighter so that it fits nicely inside the outer fabric.
    • The live stitches at the end of the cowl are joined to the provisionally cast-on stitches at the beginning using Kitchener Stitch.
