• Product description

  "The Checkers Cardigan evokes the patched flannels or plaid work coats that were the mainstay of Grandpa’s closet. Meant to be a roomy layering piece somewhere between a coat and a cardigan, this garment is worked in a welted checkerboard pattern for an extra-plush fabric that holds in warmth. Choose to work the shawl collar option and give the cozy and nostalgic factor a boost. Select colors that are high-contrast and keep Checkers true to its namesake, or opt for a tonal pairing for a more subtle take.
  

  The mosaic pattern is easy to master as only one color is used per row, slipping unworked stitches and bringing the working yarn to either the front or back as needed. After knitting a few rows of the Checkers pattern, the fun twist of the block construction is revealed; the horizontal welted block is just the opposite side of the vertical looped block, so the pattern repeat is one that’s easily memorized." — designer, Lis Smith

  CONSTRUCTION

  • The fronts, back and sleeves are worked flat from the bottom up and sewn together.
  • The fronts and back can be worked either with a slight waist taper or without shaping.
  • The front bands and collar are worked from stitches picked up along the neckline edge and are optionally shaped with Short Rows: German Method to form a shawl collar.
