The Garter Tab Cast On is used to begin triangular shawls that are worked top-down from the center, and gives a clean, polished-looking edge, without the center gap that you may get when knitting a top-down shawl with a regular cast on.
After casting on and working a few rows, you'll pick up stitches around three sides of your garter stitch tab to work your shawl from. You'll often see garter stitch tabs starting with two, three, or four stitches, our version here starts with four.
