  "The Typewriter Sweater gives a modern nod to seaworthy pullovers from ages past. Big-impact textures paired with a boxy cocoon shape make this a cuddle-worthy wardrobe warrior.

  The linear rhythms of the soothing stitch pattern remind us of the tap-tap-tapping of an old typewriter, comforting and familiar. The simple banded stitch, when worked in a chunky yarn amplifies the nostalgia, like a cartoon version of your favorite sweater.

  The oversized shape and exaggerated sleeves lean into the feeling of enveloping comfort, while smart design details keep the garment from being overwhelming. Deeply sloped shoulder seams and optional gentle waist tapering in the lower body decrease excess fabric bulk where it isn’t needed. The playful balloon sleeve slims down to a fitted cuff and maintains a clean fit at the wrist (a classic tapered sleeve is also provided in the pattern).

• Pattern specs

  CONSTRUCTION

  • Stitches are cast on for the back; the upper back is worked flat from the top down using short rows to shape the sloped shoulders. After completion of the shoulder shaping, the garment is worked flat to the underarm, with a short section of additional increases for underarm shaping at the base of the armhole. Back stitches are put on hold to work the fronts.
  • Left and right front shoulders are worked at the same time, using two balls of yarn and a long circular needle. Stitches for each front are picked up directly from the sloped shoulder edge of the back. The fronts are worked flat with a gentle rate of decreases along the armhole edges; at the same time, the front neckline is shaped with a combination of increases and cast-on stitches. When the neck shaping is complete, the fronts are joined into a single piece along the base of the center-front neckline, while the armhole edge decreases continue as established. The joined front is worked flat to the underarms, then a mirroring set of underarm increases is worked to match the back’s underarm shaping.
  • The garment is folded along the shoulder and the front and back are joined to be worked circularly, with additional stitches cast on at each underarm and a BOR marker placed on the right front.
  • The body is worked circularly to the hem. Optional body shaping may be worked at this time.
  • Sleeve stitches are picked up around each armhole and the sleeves are worked circularly to the cuff after a set of short rows to shape the cap. The sleeve shaping is worked according to knitter’s preference for a tapered or balloon sleeve.
  • The neckband is picked up and worked circularly in 1x1 rib during finishing. Collar may be worked as a single-layer neckband, or a double-thick band by working twice the desired length and sewing down the live stitches to the WS of the garment.
