Escher

Colorblock Cocoon Cardigan
Skill Level: 3 of 5
Regular price $12.00

Unwind and keep warm without abandoning your modern sensibility. Alexis Winslow is known for her bold, graphic designs, and here she’s turned a cozy, short-sleeved batwing coat into a striking statement piece. Despite its generous dimensions, Escher flatters the figure with a colorblock triangle as the slimming focal point and deep ribbing that slants across the hips. The back is worked sideways from a provisional cast on and shaped with short rows; the fabric is then joined to work each sleeve cuff in the round. The ribbing is picked up for lower and upper sections, shaped with increases, and joined with short rows. Short rows also form the shawl collar. A single button allows for fastening the fronts closed. If graphic colorblocking isn’t your style, consider working a single-color version or even substituting reverse stockinette for the Color 3 stripes.

CONSTRUCTION

  • The body is worked side-to-side from a provisional cast on, then the sides are joined and the left cuff is worked in the round, then finished with a Tubular Bind Off. The right cuff is worked in the opposite direction from the provisional cast on. Stitches are then picked up from the edge of the body for the lower ribbing, and the ribbing is shaped using increases. When the lower ribbing is complete, stitches are picked up along one side edge of the ribbing and placed on hold while additional stitches are picked up along the opposite side edge of the ribbing, then along the body to the held stitches, for the upper ribbing. The upper and lower ribbing are joined by a series of short rows which works 1 stitch from the lower ribbing together with 1 stitch from the upper ribbing. The shoulder and collar are shaped using decreases and short rows.
