Product description

Available for Pre-order! Your pre-orders help to support us while we work hard with our manufacturing partners in the American textile industry. When you pre-order, we are able to place larger production orders with the scouring facilities, mills, dyehouses, and finishers that make our yarns, enabling them to hire more staff, pay higher wages, and make the yarn that you want more quickly. We, and they, appreciate your support.

Tones is a versatile worsted weight yarn, woolen spun from American Columbia fleeces, with a round and springy 3-ply construction for stitch definition that shines in textured and cabled knits, creating a delightfully plush fabric with a slight fuzzy halo.

But we didn’t stop there – Tones’ unique colorways offer countless options for creativity.

Starting with a light and a dark heathered base yarn, we use traditional overdye techniques to create pairs of harmonious shades. Choose your favorite color’s Overtone for a light, bright version of the hue, or its Undertone for a deeper, more subdued variation.

Mix and match Overtones and Undertones in colorwork or stripes for painterly harmony in your fabric. Craft vibrant combinations using Overtones and Undertones of different hues, or go for a more subtle approach by pairing an Overtone and Undertone from the same colorway. We can’t wait to see what you create!

Developed, sourced, processed, spun and dyed 100% in the USA.

    Fiber Characteristics

Columbia sheep raised in Wyoming provide the wool for Tones. One of the first sheep breeds developed in the United States, this large, friendly medium wool breed began in 1912 in Laramie, Wyoming, as a cross between longwool Lincoln rams and finewool Rambouillet ewes. They produce thick white fleeces with robust substance, wonderful for warm and durable sweaters, accessories, and blankets.

    Dye Process

We begin with natural white wool, then dye a portion black, blending and spinning it into light and dark heathered base yarns. These are overdyed in brilliant hues using traditional skein dyeing methods, creating harmonious Tone Pairs.

  • Gauges

As a result of its woolen-spun manufacturing process, Tones knits wonderfully at a variety of gauges and can be used interchangeably with Shelter.

    4¼ - 5 stitches to 1" | Suggested Needle: 4½ - 5½ mm (US 7 - 9)  | Suggested Hook: 4½ - 5½ mm (US 7 - I-9)

  • Care

Tones is a handcrafted product. For best results, we recommend alternating skeins when joining in a new skein.

    Wet Blocking
    1. Fill a sink or basin with cold water.
    2. Submerge the fabric in water, gently squeezing out any air bubbles so that the piece can remain under water without being held there.
    3. Soak work for 15 minutes, allowing fabric to become completely saturated.
    4. Remove excess moisture by rolling your fabric between clean, dry towels with light pressure.
    5. Lay fabric flat and shape to air dry.
