Colorwork Pullover
Skill Level: 4 of 5
Regular price $13.50

This playful yoke adds a note of cheeky nostalgia to your cold-weather wardrobe. Graphic zigzag patterning is unrepentant fun against a splashy main color, but you could change the look entirely by substituting a quieter three-color scheme from the Shelter palette. The stranded colorwork on the lower torso, sleeves, and yoke uses only two colors per round. A comfortable unisex fit makes for easy layering.
Pattern includes both a shaped and a classic version.

CONSTRUCTION

  • The body and sleeves are worked circularly from the bottom up and joined at the underarms, then the yoke is worked in the round to the neckline. Both the body and the neckline are shaped using Short Rows: Yarn Over Method.

FINISHED DIMENSIONS

  • 35¼ (38½, 41½, 44¾) (48, 51¼, 54½, 57½)” [89.5 (98, 105.5, 113.5) (122, 130, 138.5, 146) cm] circumference at chest
  • Classic (Version I) sample shown is size 38½” [98 cm] with 4½” [11.5 cm] ease on model
  • Tall (Version II) sample shown is size 44¾” [113.5 cm] with 6¾” [17 cm] ease on model

The finished chest measurements are the same for both versions; see Construction Notes for differences between the two versions. Note how the sizes are divided within the parentheses for ease of following instructions.

GAUGE

  • 20 stitches & 30 rounds = 4″ in stockinette stitch with Size A needle, after blocking
  • 20 stitches & 21 rounds = 4″ in chart patterns with Size B needle, after blocking

Note: Correct length of the one-piece yoke is dependent upon achieving the stated round gauge.

NEEDLES

Size A (for Single-Color Stockinette Stitch)

  • One each 24″ and 32″ circular needles and one set of double-pointed needles (DPNs)* in size needed to obtain gauge listed
  • Suggested Size: 4½ mm (US 7)

Size B (for Two-Color Rounds of Chart Patterns)

  • One 32″ circular needle and one set of DPNs*, one size larger than Size A
  • Suggested Size: 5 mm (US 8)

Due to significant variance among knitters, your colorwork fabric should be swatched and wet-blocked prior to knitting your sweater to determine whether or not this needle size should be larger, smaller or equal to Size A. Please read about Speed-Swatching for Circular Knitting (see Special Techniques).

Size C (for Ribbing)

  • One each 16″ and 32″ circular needles and one set of DPNs*, two sizes smaller than Size A
  • Suggested Size: 3¾ mm (US 5)

Size D (optional; for Tubular Cast On and Bind Off only)

  • One each 16″ and 32″ circular needles and one set of DPNs*, one size smaller than Size C
  • Suggested Size: 3½ mm (US 4)

Note: If you have adjusted the needle size to obtain the correct gauge, it may or may not be necessary to make a matching adjustment to the needle size used for Tubular Cast On due to variance in individual work. You may wish to test your chosen cast-on method on your swatch.

*32″ circular needle can be used instead of DPNs if using the Magic Loop method for working small circumferences in the round (e.g., Sleeves).

Please note: the stitch patterns in this garment are charted only.
