Earn an advanced degree in lace with this stunning stole from Leila Raven, a long-time contributor to Wool People and Brooklyn Tweed collections who’s given us favorites like Stasis (Spring Thaw) and Bough (Wool People 6).

Mirepoix’s geometric zigzags of three distinct motifs involve double-sided patterning, but the work becomes rhythmic and intuitive after the first repeats. The chevron mesh border is worked together with the main fabric of the stole and wraps the corners to become a knitted-on edging at the short ends. Two short grafts make for an all-but-invisible finish.

Choose a light color to best show off the delicate stitchery in Mirepoix. We used Barn Owl for the sample; a bright hue like Hayloft would create a bold accent piece to wear with greys and other neutrals.

CONSTRUCTION

  • The stole begins with a Provisional Cast On (see Special Techniques) and is worked from end to end.
  • After the body has been worked, stitches for the right edging only continue to be worked as the top border, which will consume all remaining live stitches using a traditional knitted- on edging technique.
  • After the top border is complete, the bottom border will be worked in the same fashion as the top border, across stitches from the Provisional Cast On.
