A good Pi Shawl is always welcome in my knitting bag. This type of construction, developed by Elizabeth Zimmermann in the 1950’s, is a perfect balance between mindless and attentive knitting. Upon completion of Chart A, the entire shawl will have only 4 total shaping rounds remaining. You’ll be amazed at how quickly this project will fly off your needles! Named after the stunning collection of poetry by American poet Walt Whitman, these pretty motifs remind me of the Spring Thaw and the plant life that returns after Winter’s end.

Pattern Specs

CONSTRUCTION 

Worked in the round (Pi construction, Elizabeth Zimmermann) from the center out; knitted-on edging; lace motifs are charted only.


GAUGE

  • 18 stitches & 28 rows = 4″ over Chart C lace motif; relaxed after lace-blocking


NEEDLES

  • One set of DPNs and one 32″ circular in size needed to obtain gauge
  • One set of DPNs two sizes smaller than Gauge Needle
  • Suggested Sizes: US 6 (4 mm) & US 4 (3½ mm)


FINISHED DIMENSIONS

  • 54″ shawl diameter; relaxed after lace-blocking
