Sideways Cabled Cardigan
Skill Level: 4 of 5
Regular price $12.00

Knitting sideways opens up new possibilities. This cabled cardigan begins at the cuffs and grows toward the center line, exploring lateral texture and negative space. Braided horseshoe motifs play across the body and dolman half sleeves but leave the shoulders intriguingly accented by the calm of reverse stockinette. Details like garter stitch cuffs turned at an unexpected angle and an exposed bind-off at the center back highlight the unusual construction, while a continuous band of garter stitch makes a clean and practical finish to the fronts.

CONSTRUCTION

  • The cuff is worked first in garter stitch, then sleeve stitches are picked up from the side edge of the cuff and one half of the garment is knit sideways from the cuff to the center, with stitches increased and cast on for the body. The stitches are placed on hold while the process is repeated for the other half of the garment. The two sides of the back are joined using Joinery Bind Off, and the collar is worked from the front stitches and picked-up stitches along the back neck.
