Product description

Designed to be a piece for all seasons, Boardwalk is a light and simple layering or standalone vest with just the right amount of architectural detail to delight the hands while knitting and catch the eye when wearing. Its mitered welt neck feature (which mirrors the hem and cap sleeves) is akin to the geometry of gently weathered decks, benches, and boardwalks — true and fond reminders of slow summer walk by the beach. Work this piece in Peerie for a strikingly crisp effect or in Loft for a subtler, tweedy air.

Designer: Heidi Kirrmaier

Collection: Wool People, Volume 3; Peerie Launch

    CONSTRUCTION

    • Top is constructed from the bottom up.
    • The lower front and back hems are worked separately first, then joined to continue working the body circularly to the armholes, forming side slits where the separate pieces were joined. The body is then divided for front and back, which are worked flat separately to the shoulders, with the sleeves directly attached. Short rows are used to shape the shoulders, and then the tops of the sleeves and shoulders are neatly joined with a Joinery Bind Off.
    • Lastly, stitches are picked up around the neckline to complete the mitered neck detail.

  • Pattern Updates

    Current Pattern Version: v5.0

    5 December 2018: Version 5.0

On page 8, last step below "Shape Left Shoulder and Back" after the short row shaping, the pattern has been updated to read:

Transfer remaining 35 (38, 40, 41) (43, 46, 48, 48) stitches to stitch holder or waste yarn, removing marker. Break yarn.

    30 May 2018: Version 4.0

The pattern has been re-gauged for Peerie and includes updated photographs and styling.

    21 October 2016: Version 3.0

On page 5, the following has been added after the final Next Row under Shape Right Shoulder & Back Neck:

Next Row (RS): Slip 2 purlwise with yarn held in back, knit to end.

Upon completion of this section, you will have worked a total of 7 rows and have (35, 38, 40, 41) (43, 46, 48, 48) stitches for the Right Shoulder and Sleeve Cap.

On page 7, under Shape Right Shoulder, the following changes have been made:

Next 2 Rows: Work in pattern as established.

Next Row (RS): Knit until 5 stitches remain before the marker, wrap and turn.

Upon completion of this section, you will have worked a total of 5 rows and have (35, 38, 40, 41) (43, 46, 48, 48) stitches for the Right Shoulder and Sleeve Cap.

    30 July 2012: Version 2.0

3 rows were accidentally ommited from the Sleeve Cap Shaping in the original pattern – three areas (see below) were effected by this. Corrections have been listed in bold:

    • Page 4 / 2nd Column / 3rd Paragraph: “Next Row (WS): Purl 3, knit to marker, slip marker, purl to next marker…”
    • Page 4 / 2nd Column / 9th & 10th Paragraphs: “Work 11 more rows even (no increases) with sleeves in Welt Pattern and slipped stitch edges, ending with 2 rows of stockinette in Welt Pattern. Upon completion of this section you will have worked (56, 60, 60, 64) (64, 68, 68, 68) rows from Setup Increase Row.”
    • Page 5 / 2nd Column (“Upper Left Front”) / 16th & 17th Paragraphs: ”Work 13 more rows even, keeping the sleeve cap in Welt Pattern with slipped stitch edges and the Front in stockinette stitch, ending with 2 rows of reverse stockinette in Welt Pattern. Upon completion of this section you will have worked (58, 62, 62, 66) (66, 70, 70, 70) rows from the Setup Increase Row.”
    • Page 6 / 2nd Column (“Upper Right Front”) / 16th & 17th Paragraphs: ”Work 13 more rows even, keeping the sleeve cap in Welt Pattern with slipped stitch edges and the Front in stockinette stitch, ending with 2 rows of reverse stockinette in Welt Pattern. Upon completion of this section you will have worked (58, 62, 62, 66) (66, 70, 70, 70) rows from the Setup Increase Row.”
